OSBA Critical race theory Q&A (PDF) 

The National School Boards Association launched the Dismantling Institutional Racism in Education (DIRE) initiative to assist state school boards associations in addressing racial inequities. Their Resource Guide (PDF) includes resources on DEI, anti-racism and Black Lives Matter. Published in Feb. 2021, “Reimagining School Board Leadership: Actions for Equity” focuses on acknowledging and understanding current events and the historical issues of systemic racism.

The National Education Association offers an extensive resource library, including a Racial Justice in Education Guide (PDF), Education and Equity in a Post-COVID SocietyConfronting White Nationalism in Schools Toolkit and Black Lives Matter at School.

The Education Trust-NY has a downloadable “Educator Diversity Playbook” for school district leaders.

The National Equity Project provides resources, tools and consulting services to build equity in schools and organizations. 

The Center for Racial Justice in Education trains educators to dismantle patterns of racism and injustice in schools. Their website offers a reading list and resources for talking about race.

The Western States Center provides a toolkit for Confronting White Nationalism in School (PDF). 

The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland held webinars representing people who have historically—and continually—been the targets of discrimination and hatred in Oregon. Watch “Uncovering the hidden history of discrimination in Oregon.”

The Aspen Institute Education & Society Program informs education leaders to take action across policy and practice, with an emphasis on achieving equity for students of color and children from low-income backgrounds.

Equity Literacy Institute offers free and low cost training and assistance for schools, school districts, and other educational organizations.

Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance) provides free educational resources on race, diversity and equity. It also provides self-guided professional development facilitator guides complete with protocols, worksheets and presenter slides.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children provides resources on anti-bias education, equity and diversity.

21-Day Racial Equity Challenge is a web-based activity that can be done on your own at your own pace or with a group on a monthly basis. It also has a reflection journal template and a community discussion forum.

Dismantling Racism Works offers a workbook with a range of resources, including how to form caucuses and teams in race equity work, race equity principles for taking action and a race equity tool for organizations in developing explicit goals.

Racial Equity Tools hosts a library of over 2,500 resources to help organizations and individuals in their equity work.  

In the book Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People, there is an Implicit Association Test to determine one’s biases. It is available in the e-book versions of Blindspot and on Harvard’s Project Implicit website. Read more about the test in this article, “For years, this popular test measured anyone’s racial bias. Ten ways school boards can champion racial equity by Pat Savage-Williams offers advice to school boards to enact systemic change in their districts.

A Long Talk offers an anti-racism experience through two, two-hour sessions. 

Center for Equity and Inclusion focuses on advancing equity, diversity and inclusion efforts within organizations, education systems and communities. 

State resources

ODE’s “Every Student Belongs” rule requires districts to create policies that prohibit hate symbols in schools. ODE’s website offers a resolution template (PDF), guidance (PDF), a communications toolkit (PDF) and a bias incident response guide (PDF).

ODE Equity Initiatives
Senate Bill 739 directed ODE to develop academic content standards for Oregon Studies and prepare materials to support teacher professional development and classroom instruction for these students: African AmericanHispanicNative American and Asian American/Pacific Islander.
