• How Certification Works

  To achieve full accreditation and graduate from the Leadership Institute, individuals are encouraged to complete all three levels of the program—bronze, silver, and gold—in sequence. Each level builds upon the previous one, equipping participants with progressively advanced leadership skills and knowledge. While participants should complete each level as a prerequisite for the next, it is not strictly required. Individuals attending one of our day-long preconference institute events may bypass the sequential order for that level. However, while they will receive a Certificate of Completion for the preconference event, they may not receive recognition for silver or gold level completion until they have fulfilled the prerequisites by completing the prior levels at our events.

• The Leadership Institute Individual Bronze Certificate of Completion

  This certificate is awarded to individuals who have successfully completed courses from the following foundational level categories, designed to introduce essential leadership principles. Participants are encouraged to complete the bronze level before advancing to the silver level, as it establishes core competencies in areas critical to governance and educational leadership:

  • Board Governance Essentials
  • Introduction to Educational Equity
  • Policy Fundamentals
  • Public Meetings and Ethics
  • School Finance and Budgeting

  Those attending a day-long preconference institute event focused on the bronze level will receive a Certificate of Completion but are encouraged to proceed sequentially to fully benefit from the program.

• The Leadership Institute Individual Silver Certificate of Completion

  After earning the bronze certificate, individuals are encouraged to progress to the silver level. This certificate is granted upon the completion of intermediate-level courses from the following categories that expand on foundational knowledge, focusing on applying leadership principles in more complex scenarios:

  • Vision-Directed Planning for Student Success
  • Accountability and Continuous Improvement
  • Community Engagement and Advocacy
  • Introduction to Culturally Responsive Governance
  • Effective Leadership and Governance

  While participants can attend a silver level day-long preconference event without completing the bronze level, full recognition for the silver level will be granted only after the bronze level is completed.

• The Leadership Institute Individual Gold Certificate of Completion

  The final step in the program is the gold level, which is the most advanced. The gold certificate is awarded to individuals who have completed courses from the following categories, which delve deeply into high-level leadership concepts:

  • Organizational Culture and Climate
  • Using Data for Student Success
  • Culturally Responsive Practices in Governance
  • Innovative Practices to Improve Student Learning
  • Systems Thinking in Governance

  These courses are designed to refine and polish leadership skills, preparing participants to take on senior leadership roles. Although attending a gold level preconference event without completing the silver level is possible, participants will only be recognized for full gold level completion after they have successfully completed both the bronze and silver levels.

• Full Certification

  Once participants have completed all three levels (bronze, silver, and gold) sequentially or through a combination of regular courses and preconference events, they will receive the prestigious Leadership Institute Individual Certificate of Completion. This full certification acknowledges their dedication and mastery of leadership concepts at all levels, signifying their readiness to take on significant leadership responsibilities within their organizations.

• 2024 Leadership Institute Program Update, Transition & Credit Transfers

  In 2024, we are excited to introduce updates to our Leadership Institute program, featuring new category titles and descriptions approved by the Board Development team. For participants who have completed coursework and workshops between July 2021 and December 2024 under the previous system, we are providing a seamless credit transfer process. This includes a detailed crosswalk between prior course categories and the updated categories, ensuring all eligible courses taken during this period are credited towards the new program.

  Board members and boards receiving awards are recognized publicly for the time and commitment they make to being outstanding school leaders. Recognition includes:
