The 2023 Legislature changed the laws regarding schools’ use of restraint and seclusion. The Oregon Department of Education has updated its resources.
The ODE page addresses recently passed legislation, including:
- Senate Bill 790, which changes the definition of “abuse” and requires staff training in the use of restraint and seclusion.
- SB 283, which creates the Safe School Culture Grant program to help with training.
- SB 1024, which specifies rules for maintaining and sharing records related to restraint and seclusion.
ODE is working on rules for SB 1024 and is taking feedback through a survey.
