Updates to federal education civil rights laws will be delayed until October, the U.S. Department of Education announced last week.
In July, the Biden administration proposed amending Title IX to strengthen protections for students dealing with sexual harassment or assault and for students who identify as LGBTQ+. A proposal would also further address athletics regulations for gender-based participation. The Education Department said it needed extra time after receiving more than 240,000 public comments on the protections and 150,000 on sports regulations.
The proposed rule changes for student protections, a fact sheet and the public comments are available online. The athletics proposals, a fact sheet and those public comments are also online.
