It’s campaign season for Oregon’s Kid Governor.
The Oregon program, an affiliate of an award-winning program created by the Connecticut Democracy Center, teaches fifth graders about state government and civic engagement. Every elementary school in the state can nominate a candidate for Kid Governor and vote in the election. Teachers receive free toolkits to guide lessons and discussions.
Candidates must create campaign videos that include a community issue they want to address and a plan for Oregon fifth graders to make a difference. Past Kid Governors have tackled issues such as bullying, animal adoption, helping the homeless and promoting kindness.
Classes must register by Nov. 6 to participate in the statewide election.
