OSBA creates equity and inclusivity training series

Tuesday, September 13, 2022

Responding to school board members’ needs, OSBA has created a training series on inclusivity and equity.

“We know this kind of inclusive work really helps improve student achievement, and our members have been asking us for more guidance,” said Kristen Miles, OSBA Board Development specialist.

“Success for All,” a three-part series of approximately three hours each, covers issues ranging from the basics of the differences between equity and equality to using data to develop plans to support all students. OSBA can help school boards decide where in the series they should start.

The OSBA Board issued a “Call for Equity” earlier this year and has committed to aiding boards in their support for all students around the state.

Using the latest research, OSBA staff developed the trainings with an understanding that school districts in different parts of the state have unique challenges to raise the achievement levels of all their students. The trainings aim to guide school board members in how they can best respond to the local needs they identify.

“OSBA’s commitment to its ‘Call for Equity’ says: What does it look like in your district?” said Miles. “What it looks like in the Willamette Valley will be different from how it looks in eastern Oregon.”
