New OSBA advocacy materials aimed at #fundourschools

Thursday, April 20, 2017
budget cuts
OSBA staff have created new materials to assist members with advocacy efforts in response to the co-chairs’ proposed K-12 budget figure of $7.8 billion.

The figure released this week translates to drastic cuts for schools, said OSBA Executive Director Jim Green.

"This is $600 million short of the $8.4 billion we need to continue offering the same programs and services in 2017-19,” Green said.

The new materials include:

  • a one-page flyer with key messages,important dates and methods of communication;
  • graphics for social media posting; and
  • several samples of effective ways to write an email to legislators.

Betty Reynolds, president of the OSBA board, urges members to contact their legislators and broadly communicate information about how proposed cuts will affect their schools and student.

“Our experience in the Capitol has revealed one indisputable fact as tough legislative issues go down to the wire: the most effective voice in the room belongs to you, the local constituent with a track record of caring for our young people,” Reynolds said.

Advocacy materials can also be found on the website of Oregon Rising, a campaign in which OSBA is a partner, at www.oregon-rising.org/Take-Action.

OSBA’s legislative team is actively monitoring these budget negotiations. Please send any comments or questions to Lori Sattenspiel, interim director of legislative services, at lsattenspiel@osba.org.
