Scott Brant is a Corvallis carpenter who created a unique, one-man venture – a Web site called Waypoint Corvallis. It’s going well enough he hopes to make it a full-time venture in five years.

While attending Linn-Benton Community College last year, Scott designed a clearinghouse of giving ideas for Corvallis schools as a class project. “I chose a class called Working with Children and Families just to fill a time slot. It turned out to be my best class.”

Brandt’s idea started when he noticed the basketball hoop at his child’s school was missing the net. “I wanted to make a difference, so I researched all the different sources of fund raising, including corporate giving programs,” he said. “I looked around for a source of ideas, but couldn’t find one, so I created Waypoint. Our goal is to educate people about corporate programs and bring local businesses into partnership with their local schools.”

In creating the Web site, he “almost gave up three times” but eventually mastered the program called “Front Page” to create the Web site.

The site is a gateway to dozens of fundraising programs for local schools, including business partnerships, programs such as Scrip and Labels for Learning. He includes drop sites for donations, even the school district’s inclement weather procedures and local community events. Interest grew – he gets about 10,000 visits a month – and from 16 countries besides the U.S.

“Scott receives no funds for his efforts, and has volunteered many hours to help get the word out about corporate giving opportunities in the community,” says Laverne Pitts, Corvallis School District Foundation Director.
