Modified Four Day Week Survey Results

In September of 2005, OSBA sent out a survey to Oregon school districts inquiring how many of them were using a modified four day week in their schools. We were able to compile the following information:

  • “Our modified week is early release on Friday's. We have approximately 1 and 1/2 hours for prep and professional development (voluntary) arranged by the staff at each school.” -Baker
  • “Approximately once a month we have inservice for our staff. We also have contract days for grading, parent conferences, and miscellaneous teacher work time.” -Camas Valley 21
  • “I led the conversion of Heppner High School (as a part of the entire Morrow County SD) to a 4-day student week in the early 90's. I led the effort to convert Colton SD in 2003-04. I have lots of data and information about how to do this.” -Colton 53
  • “This schedule has strengths, but saving money is not, in our opinion, one of them. This should be done for instructional reasons if at all.” -Corbett 39
  • “Cove has been on a 4-day week since the 1980's.” -Cove 15
  • “All students attend school 4 days per week, teachers attend until noon on Fridays as prep time” -Crane 4
  • “Crane High has been on a 4.5 day schedule for many years” -Crane UH1J
  • “Harper has been this way for the past 6 years” -Harper 66
  • “This has worked well for the small school. When most of the students are involved in sports, we have scheduled our games for Friday and Saturday. This makes a smoother transition for student work. When we moved to the four day week, I assured the board” -Huntington 16J
  • “Imbler School District is on a 4.5 day school week.” -Imbler 11
  • “Started in 02-03 so beginning 3rd year” -Marcola 79J
  • “We are using a modified 4-1/2 day schedule. Students are released at 12:24 p.m. on Friday afternoons and staff participate in building and district professional development activities” -North Douglas 22
  • “I'm not sure what you are referring to by "modified." This district has been on a four-day week schedule for many years. The total number of hour requirements are being met for all grades.” -Pine Creek
  • “All schools in the region are on 4 day schedules.” -Spray 1
