Despite OSBA's opposition to SB 426 - the mandatory health insurance pool - OSBA Executive Director Kevin McCann met with the governor earlier this month offering to help the Oregon Educators Benefit Board move forward in the best interests of school districts and ESDs.
"It was a positive meeting - not only about insurance but to confirm our support for health care reform in general and adequate school funding," McCann said. "He knows we are a strong partner in the push for $6.3 billion. We talked about the need for all public education groups to join forces. We need to take back the agenda in school issues. I'm pleased to note he also supports repealing the double-majority law."
McCann offered OSBA's 40-plus years of experience to help OEBB design cost-effective plans.
"We want to help, and I believe he understood that we are sincere," McCann said, noting he's had regular contact with Jean Thorne, the Public Employees' Benefits Board administrator charged with establishing OEBB and its staff.
OSBA Health Insurance Trust update
The OSBA Board will meet in Salem May 5 to decide the future of its Health Insurance Trust.
"Because most districts must join the new pool, it's extremely unlikely our trust will remain viable," McCann said. "Our goal is to preserve and use trust assets in the best interests of OSBA members and the services we provide as an association.
"OSBA is at an important crossroads. We have the opportunity to re-set priorities and serve members in ways they value most."
