Keynote Speakers

Leonard Pitts, Jr.Friday General Session
We’ll go forward
Columnist/Author Leonard Pitts Jr.

Emotionally engaging, funny and insightful, Leonard Pitts Jr. writes a nationally syndicated biweekly column. He won a Pulitzer prize for commentary in 2004. He is the author of Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood.

Pitts connects with readers on an emotional, intellectual and moral level. When his column “We’ll Go Forward From This Moment,” responded defiantly to September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, citizens replicated the column on posters and in song and sent it round the world on the Internet. Pitts, a Southern California native who now lives in the Washington, D.C., area with his wife and five children, speaks as engagingly as he writes -- with humor and wisdom -- helping carry us forward with hope and determination, whatever the challenges.

LouAnne JohnsonSaturday General Session
The power of choice
LouAnne Johnson, Author, Teacher, Journalist

LouAnne Johnson is a gutsy ex-marine-turned-teacher-and-author whose life inspired the movie Dangerous Minds. She delivers creative advice about fixing schools: No class shall have more than 20 students, elected representatives must teach for two weeks in public schools, members of Congress must enroll their kids in public schools, and the testing frenzy has got to STOP. She believes in bucking bureaucracy to tweak our educational system so that it serves ALL children. Johnson, a writer and professional public speaker, also serves as an ESL instructor and an educational consultant. She has appeared on Oprah, CBS Eye to Eye, NBC Weekend Today, Tom Snyder and CNN Talkback Live.
