Cultural intelligence: Education bridges the past and the future
Dr. Jennifer James

In the face of change it is hard to give up old ideas about the way things “ought to be.” Accepting a changing community requires education and cultural intelligence – the ability to observe and understand our own culture and the cultures of others. Take a step beyond your present boundaries and explore where we are, where we are going – and gain some optimism about the future.

Dr. Jennifer James, noted cultural anthropologist, lecturer and writer, is well known around the world for her thought-provoking ideas. Her books include Windows, Success Is the Quality of Your Journey, and Thinking in the Future Tense. She has written more than 50 academic articles and penned a newspaper column for the Seattle Times for 18 years. James has filmed two PBS specials, “Thinking in the Future Tense” and “A Workout for the Mind.”

A Legal Look at Religion in Schools
Dr. Steven Green, Associate Professor of Law and Center for Law Director, Willamette University College of Law

School prayer, public funding of religious institutions, public religious displays, religious discrimination and freedom of speech are among the legal issues in the church-state debate. Explore how religious diversity impacts schools, common myths and how the law impacts policy on classrooms, religious holidays, student clubs, release time, athletic events, assemblies, graduations, student distributions – even evolution. Presenter: Dr. Steven Green, Associate Professor of Law at Willamette University and an expert in First Amendment law.

Professional learning communities
Dr. Rick DuFour
[Web Site]
Is there an essential culture gap in our schools that allows some students to fail? How do we respond to students who learn differently? The concept of professional learning communities focuses on creating a collaborative culture that supports continuous improvement in all students.

Dr. Rick DuFour was named one of the nation’s top 100 school administrators by Executive Educator Magazine. He is the only school leader in Illinois to receive his state’s highest award as both a principal and superintendent. DuFour is an expert in creating “professional learning communities” and sustaining school improvement and collaboration. He has conducted workshops and consulted with school districts throughout the U.S and Canada.

Katie HarmanSunday General Session
Public education sets the stage for success
Katie Harman

Celebrate one of Oregon’s success stories. The road from Centennial High School in Portland to Miss America included lessons on achieving personal goals – and the power of having shared goals. Everyone has the power to affect change through purposeful service – and that is the essence of serving on a school board.

Katie Harman, Miss America 2002 (and former student rep on the Centennial School Board) is known for her disarming wit and charm. At 25, she has become an accomplished speaker. She will share how public education has been the cornerstone of her success, from having good teachers to serving on the board and becoming a champion for cancer research.
