SALEM – Peggy Penland, Medford School District board member, is the new president of the Oregon School Boards Association for 2004-2005.

"The issues around public education have become critical to our entire state," says Penland. "School board members are in the best position to provide the leadership necessary to ensure that our students' education remains the focus."

Penland was installed as president at OSBA's annual business meeting Nov. 13 held at the association's 58th annual convention at the Portland Marriott Nov. 12-14. Penland served as the association's president-elect this past year.

Other newly elected officers are Craig A. Smith (Eugene), president-elect; David Beeson (Willamette ESD/Silver Falls), vice president; and Jeff Sanders (Jefferson County), secretary/treasurer. Carolyn Ortman (Hillsboro) is the association's immediate past president.

Newly elected board members are Idalia Stam (Nyssa), 2rd Congressional District; and Maria Caballero (Gervais), 5th Congressional District.

Board members elected for a second term are Kathy Huntington (Hillsboro), 1st Congressional District; Annette Mattson (David Douglas), 3rd Congressional District; Beth Gerot (Eugene), 4th Congressional District; and Craig Prewitt (Phoenix-Talent), Director-at-Large.

OSBA officers service one-year terms; directors serve two-year terms unless elected to fill a vacancy created by a board resignation.

The OSBA board of directors includes the president, president-elect, vice president, secretary/treasurer, past president, two directors from each of Oregon's five congressional districts and two directors elected at large. The directors are elected at the association's annual business meeting held in November during its annual convention. Members must attend the annual business meeting to vote.
