Carolyn Ortman, Hillsboro School District board member, is OSBA president for 2003-04.

"The issues we face are bigger and more pressing," says Ortman. "We must be proactive in presenting and implementing solutions to issues affecting education and our students. Now is the time to have bold leadership to meet these challenges."

Ortman was installed as president at OSBA's annual business meeting Nov. 15 held at the association's 57th annual convention at the Portland Marriott Nov. 14-16. Ortman served as the association's president-elect this past year.

Other newly elected officers are Peggy Penland (Medford), president-elect; Craig Smith (Eugene), vice president; and David Beeson (Willamette ESD/Silver Falls), secretary/treasurer. Sherry Duerst-Higgins (South Lane/Lane ESD), is the association's immediate past president.

Newly elected board members are Kathy Huntington (Hillsboro), 1st Congressional District; Francis Charbonnier (McMinnville), 1st Congressional District; Julia Brim-Edwards (Portland) 3rd Congressional District; Scott Pillar (High Desert ESD), Director-at-Large; and Dean Livelybrooks (Crow-Applegate-Lorane), 4th Congressional District.

Board members elected for a second term are Roger Whitaker (Clackamas ESD), 5th Congressional District; and Paul Zastrow (Regional 9 ESD), 2nd Congressional District.

OSBA officers service one-year terms; directors serve two-year terms unless elected to fill a vacancy created by a board resignation.

The OSBA board of directors includes the president, president-elect, vice president, secretary/treasurer, past president, two directors from each of Oregon's five congressional districts and two directors elected at large. The directors are elected at the association's annual business meeting held in November during it's annual convention. Members had to attend the annual business meeting to vote.
