Proposed changes in governance will be explained
September 20, 2007 issue of Outlook & Review
The OSBA board, when it met September 14-15, revised the plans for voting on governance changes and candidates for OSBA office during this year's
annual convention (Nov.
8-11), including adding four information sessions on Friday and Saturday, and expanding hours to make voting more inclusive.
OSBA members will have the opportunity to attend one or more of the a.m. and p.m. information sessions, which will include a presentation on the proposed changes and time for questions.
The current OSBA Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote of members present to change the constitution, which is necessary to enact the governance-change proposals recommended by the Governance Committee and forwarded for a vote by the OSBA board.
The resolution
(59k )
would substantially change the 11-page OSBA Constitution because it changes governance regions, terms of office, duties of some offices, nomination procedures, etc.
Voting at convention
Voting will be open expanded hours both Friday and Saturday. Upon presenting identification, every OSBA member of a school, ESD board or community college board will be eligible to vote (including those not registered for the convention).
Convention packets this year will contain maps of proposed districts as well as explanations of proposed governance changes and a sample ballot.
Prior to convention, OSBA members will receive an issue of Focus on Critical Issues dedicated to the governance-change process and the Governance Committee's nine months of work. Members will also receive a voters' pamphlet.
You can meet the candidates at the Opening Reception for convention on Thursday, Nov. 8, 4-6 p.m. The luncheon on Friday will include brief introductory remarks by each candidate wishing to participate. Campaigning will not be allowed in or near the voting area; however, there will be several kiosks to contain candidate information.
