WHEREAS, school safety is nationally-recognized as a matter of utmost concern, requiring the careful and regular attention of school boards, educators, law enforcement agencies and communities; and
WHEREAS, a coalition of Oregonians, convened by the Oregon Attorney General in 2001 to make recommendations for improving school safety in Oregon, encouraged schools to prohibit the carrying of concealed weapons on school campuses in order increase the safety of the school environment; and
WHEREAS, Oregon law currently allows persons with concealed weapons permits to carry weapons on school property and at school-sponsored activities that are open to the public; and
WHEREAS, the constitutional rights regarding firearms are and should be regulated in a uniform manner throughout the state.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Oregon School Boards Association strongly encourages the Oregon Legislature to enact
legislation that will allow local school district boards to adopt policies that will prohibit the carrying of any concealed weapon on school property that is under control of the local school board or at a school
activity by all persons, with the exception of law enforcement officers or those who have received the express written consent of the district superintendent or the superintendent’s designee.
