Self-assessment leads to change
by Kevin McCann, OSBA executive director
August 7, 2008
Throughout spring and summer, OSBA has been in a process of self-assessment and change. We started with an audit conducted by peers from other state's school board associations.
After reviewing their input together as a staff and looking for ways to be more efficient in meeting members' needs, we reorganized somewhat to focus on new methods of providing the services we know you value highly. We've also put plans in motion for another member survey, because we want your input.
One of the most exciting features of our new service model is regional teams. I believe that these teams will help us build even better relationships among OSBA members and staff. Team members will work together and keep one another informed about the issues in your district. You'll receive more personalized service from professionals who are familiar with your district's history.
This is how the regional teams are set up; note that there are new names of departments, in some cases:
East
- Legal, Labor & Employment Services: Jeff Heinrich, Morgan Smith
- Board Development & Policy Services: Joe Wehrli (team leader), Steve Lamb
- Legislative & Public Affairs: Lori Sattenspiel
Southwest
- Legal, Labor & Employment Services: Jessica Knieling (team leader), Morgan Smith
- Board Development & Policy Services: Rick Stucky
- Legislative & Public Affairs: Tricia Yates
Northwest
- Legal, Labor & Employment Services: Steve Norman, Rebekah Cook
- Board Development & Policy Services: Peggy Holstedt (team leader)
- Legislative & Public Affairs: David Williams
Other OSBA staff members will continue to meet members' needs throughout the state.
Even moving the whereabouts of the breakfast cereal can take some getting used to, and substantive changes in the workplace can wobble anybody's apple cart.
But change is invigorating when there are new plans and programs under way: We're collaborating on new growth-model data analysis to help members make the best decisions for students, embarking on a new era of OSBA governance, preparing for a new legislative session, and, along with you, looking forward to another success-filled school year.
