Charter schools get new services
OSBA offers these valuable resources for charter schools.
Sample policies CD: OSBA created sample policies regarding charter school governance, fiscal management, personnel, students, instruction, support services and community relations. These policies have been vetted through the Oregon Department of Education, OSBA's legal division and with input from certain charter schools and organizations. A disk of sample policies is $3,500.
This service includes:
- A CD of OSBA sample required and highly recommended policies and administrative regulations
- A subscription to Policy Update for the term of the contract
- Up to five hours of training and unlimited phone support with a policy specialist to assist in answering questions to aid during the review and selection process (training and phone support must occur within a 12 month period beginning from the date of agreement)
- Two custom hard copies and a CD of adopted charter school policies/administrative regulations
- Round-trip mileage from Salem is billed at the current IRS rate above the base fee
- Meals, lodging and other expenses are billed at actual cost above the base fee
Customized policy manual: The charter school policy service includes comprehensive policy drafting and maintenance to meet legal requirements and specific charter school needs. A customized policy manual costs $7,000 per charter.
This service includes:
- Samples of current required and highly recommended policies and administrative regulations as recommended by a policy specialist
- Up to 12 meetings with an OSBA policy specialist (not to exceed 18 months from the date of the agreement)
- A subscription to Policy Update for the term of the contract
- Two custom hard copies and a CD of adopted charter school policies/administrative regulations
- Round-trip mileage from Salem is billed at the current IRS rate above the base fee
- Meals, lodging and other expenses are billed at actual cost above the base fee

Policy Update: Beginning July 1, 2010, charter schools may subscribe to OSBA’s quarterly Policy Update newsletter covering policy issues of concern to Oregon schools and sample policies and administrative regulations reflecting changes in state and federal law. Annual subscription is $350. More Details.
Legal/employee management guidance: Charter schools have access to OSBA legal and employee management services. (OSBA cannot represent charter schools in conflict with sponsoring districts.) Contact Morgan Smith.
Workshops: OSBA offers workshops for charter school and/or sponsoring district boards related to board roles and responsibilities, ethics laws, public meetings laws and other topics customized to specific needs. Contact Betsy Miller-Jones.
Annual convention: OSBA encourages charter school officials to present workshops at annual convention. OSBA begins accepting workshop proposals each March. Contact Steve Lamb.
