The Community
Sutherlin is a city of 7,000 people with a small town feel. Located in rural Douglas County, Sutherlin is quietly nestled in a valley surrounded by hills between the Cascade and Coastal mountain ranges and is a short distance from the Umpqua River with quick and easy I-5 access to larger communities.
Sutherlin was incorporated in 1911 and enjoyed its centennial celebration this year. The economy is diverse with manufacturing in lumber and septic and water systems. Local wineries are a growing business in and around the surrounding community. The Sutherlin School District boasts a successful partnership with the community and is one of its main employers.
Sutherlin is touted as “The Gateway to Recreation.” Within five minutes of Sutherlin are Plat I and Copper Creek Reservoirs and the Pacific Coast or Cascade Mountains are only an hour’s distance. Year-round recreation includes: hiking, backpacking, water skiing, camping, swimming, tennis, golfing, fishing and hunting. Sutherlin is a proud community and celebrates many of its own annual traditions including the Blackberry Festival, the Sutherlin Stampede Rodeo and the Umpqua Triathlon.
The District
The Sutherlin School District is comprised of over 1,300 students in four schools including: East Primary School (Grades K-3), West Sutherlin Intermediate School (4-6), Sutherlin Middle School (7-8) and Sutherlin High School (9-12). The District employs a staff of 79 teachers, 78 classified employees, seven administrators, four confidential employees and five supervisors. The District operates with a general fund budget of $11.4 million and a total budget of $16.1 million.
The District enjoys the strong support of a family-oriented community. Students volunteer throughout the community and actively participate in community based events. Despite the economy, Sutherlin School District has worked diligently to sustain extracurricular activities valued by the students and staff including FFA and FBLA.

Administrative

Possesses knowledge of and an ability to promote effective educational improvement and instructional practices in all curricular areas

Is a problem solver and involves others in the process

Able to work successfully with and understand a business approach to school management

Understands Oregon's economic situation and is willing to work toward common solutions

Possesses knowledge about and has successful experience with personnel issues, labor negotiations and contract management
