Superintendent: Banks School District, Banks Oregon
December 28, 2011
The Community
Banks is a small town located close to a large metropolitan area yet far enough away to enjoy a relaxed country lifestyle. The current population of Banks is approximately 1,700 but the resident population within the school district is approximately 4,500. The city is located 26 miles west of Portland, Oregon’s largest city, and 50 miles from the north Oregon coast.
Nestled in the scenic foothills of Oregon’s coastal mountain range and wine country, the area offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities. Three golf courses, award-winning wineries and several parks are nearby; antique and craft shops, a public library and several restaurants are located in town; and concerts and art exhibits are offered at the nearby Pacific University. The Banks/Vernonia Linear Trail runs 26 miles between Banks and Vernonia and provides a pleasant and safe activity for pedestrians, equestrians and bicyclists.
Agriculture and timber are the main industries within the district but the majority of employed people work in areas outside the community and commute to jobs in the Portland metropolitan area.
The District
Banks School District serves approximately 1,100 students in one elementary school (K-6), one junior high school (7-8) and one high school (9-12). The district employs 59 licensed staff, 39 classified/support staff, four confidential staff and six administrative staff and has a general fund budget of approximately $8.5 million and a total budget in excess of $11.7million.
The district encompasses 450 square miles that stretch 20 miles from east to west and 18 miles north to south. The district enjoys strong support from the community, a cohesive school board that works well together and dedicated, long-term staff members.
