Attendance notification

House Bill 3197

The 2011 Legislative session passed HB 3197 requiring district, ESD and charter school boards to adopt policy related to attendance notification. Beginning with the coming school year (2011-2012), the new house bill requires each school in the district to notify parents/guardians by the end of the school day on any day the child has an unplanned absence. OSBA understands that many districts, ESDs and charter schools already have such a procedure in place and adoption of policy is a formality. OSBA is releasing recommended language that complies with the law for revising board policies, and to provide samples for use if required policy does not already exist. It is recommended that superintendents or charter school directors/administrators ask their board for a single reading/adoption of recommended language so schools are compliant on the first day of school, or soon after. If an ESD operates a school, this new language is required in policy--see samples.
