Position: Director of Secondary Education

About the District


Springfield Public Schools is located in Springfield, Oregon, in the heart of the Willamette Valley and serves 185 square miles of the city of Springfield and East/Central Lane County.  We are directly to the East of Eugene, where the University of Oregon is located.  We currently have 10,200 students, 1436 staff members and over 600 teachers in our kindergarten through grade 12 school district.  Springfield Public Schools believes student success is our most important outcome.  The success of our students depends on the collective community coming together to support Every Student, Every Day throughout their K-12 education. 

About the Position

The Director of Secondary Education is a member of the District Instructional Leadership team and is responsible for organizing the Secondary Programs to achieve the District vision:  Every Student a Graduate, Prepared for a Bright and Successful Future. This position will engage principals as instructional leaders to ensure high quality instruction is making it possible for all students to learn at high levels.

 

The Director of Secondary Education is responsible to ensure compliance with state standards and the District’s policies and procedures as well as provide direct support to secondary administrators with management of school operations.  They will support and implement the District mission and goals, and Board Strategic Direction. The Director will work with Human Resources to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and retain building administrators.  They are a key member of the District team that will be responsible for principal evaluation and selection of candidates at the secondary level.

  • Create ownership at the individual school level by utilizing effective communication and assessment measures to identify where school ownership can effectively increase student achievement
  • Navigate conflicts around race, ethnicity, religion, class and language in a safe and productive manner
  • Work collaboratively with students, staff and parents from diverse racial, ethnic, religious, class and language backgrounds
  • Promote equity of student access and outcomes
  • Understand, respond to, and influence political, social, legal and cultural contexts
  • Assist schools as they maintain a positive working relationship with external organizations
  • Assist schools in developing appropriate alternative school options
  • Build principal capacity to plan and implement programs and policies effectively, and assesses and evaluates program and policy effectiveness based on information, evidence and data
  • Expertise in the area of multi-tiered approach to instruction and intervention (prevention/intervention framework) associated with academics and social/emotional/behavioral supports. Understands the core features of School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RtI)
  • Ability to bring about change in a district through anticipating problems, meeting needs, and shared decision making, while working effectively as a member of the district team
  • Build principal capacity in keeping abreast of state mandates, district initiatives, and participation in collaborative opportunities which support school improvement plans
  • Ability to analyze statistical data for trends and standard performance in various programs and to develop strategies for improvement to help students reach benchmarks and higher state standards
  • Knowledge of a range of effective school concepts and principles
  • Ability to lead change with authenticity and awareness
  • Recognize technology as a vital instructional component
  • Ability to plan for policy implementation, curriculum and assessment design, and staff development that demonstrates understanding and forethought as to the effects that such implementation(s) have on an entire community of teachers and learners

Primary Responsibilities


  • Provide leadership to school improvement, analyzes data of schools, and supports school improvement plans for academic success, including the appropriate use of interventions as well as culturally responsive practices
  • Work together with principals as partners, growing their instructional leadership capabilities
  • Develop professional learning networks for principals, focusing on their growth in instructional leadership
  • Engage principals in professional development, based on their learning needs
  • Support and implement the District Mission and Goals and Board Strategic Directions
  • Actively engage as a member of the district Instructional Department team to support student success efforts across the K-12 continuum
  • Support the design and implementation of evidence-based curriculum, instruction and assessment practices that meet the needs of diverse learners and align with College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards
  • Lead and work in partnership with administrators and union leaders to implement best practices that align with Board and District Goals
  • Support the development, implementation, and scaling up of systems, partnerships, and resources to support PBIS and RtI across the secondary level using a prevention and intervention framework
  • Assist schools in developing appropriate alternative school options
  • Assist schools as they maintain a positive working relationship with external organizations, such as:  Springfield Education Foundation, Springfield Chambers of Commerce, Lane Community College, University of Oregon, Lane Education Service District (ESD), Confederation of School Administrators (COSA), Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), Oregon Department of Education (ODE), etc.
  • Lead District Athletics and Co-Curricular offerings at the secondary level and support of building athletic directors, activities, and Title IX compliance
  • Meet with parents, civic, and community groups to explain and interpret matters relating to the educational programs and operations of the District
  • Coordinate with other departments that impact the instructional program/level office: Communications, Financial Services, Maintenance, Facility Services, Human Resources, Transportation, etc. toward the solution of issues and problems not resolvable at the school level
  • Communicate directly with staff, parents, students, and community concerning issues/complaints
  • Manage and problem solve increased individual and District issues with the insistence of immediate resolution
  • Assure District policy and administrative rules are consistently and fairly applied
  • Provide essential communication network to buildings and staff
  • Work cooperatively with the Assistant Superintendent and Instruction in the management of assigned responsibilities as directed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Reports to the Assistant Superintendent

Certification & Experience

•Successful secondary school principal experiences
•Experience with Comprehensive High School Programming
•Valid Oregon Administrative License
•Advanced Degree:  Masters Degree or Doctorate
•Five years of administrative experience
