Notice of Open Administrative Position

Position: Superintendent

The North Douglas School District Board of Directors is seeking a highly qualified candidate with visionary leadership skills and successful experience in education administration to serve as superintendent. The successful candidate must have experience as a building-level administrator, excellent communication skills, unquestionable integrity and be willing to be involved in the community. The successful candidate should exhibit the following qualities and qualifications:

• Demonstrates strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities; able to delegate appropriately and supervise responsibility to others with the appropriate follow-through with commitments;
• Highly visible in the school and community; actively participates in school and community activities;
• Provides visionary leadership; demonstrates a thoughtful approach to collaborative consensus building when working with diverse groups and individuals;
• Demonstrates a commitment to the importance of academic, co-curricular and extracurricular programs with an emphasis on a well-rounded education that utilizes the community’s resources.
• Demonstrates strong communication skills and makes this a priority in this position.
• Displays a transparent communication style by utilizing all districts tools to communicate with students, families, community members and staff;
• Is approachable, accessible and listens to others with an open mind and accepts differences of opinion.
• A proven record of successful teaching and administrative experience in a public-school district, preferably in a small rural community;
• Has knowledge of, preferably experience in, special programs including special education, talented and gifted, behaviorally challenged and federal programs;
• Understands school finance, demonstrates sound fiscal management and budgeting skills, has grant writing experience;
• Has a reputation for building positive, supportive relationships with all students/staff/community members and for treating ALL with dignity and respect;
• Shows a genuine concern for and understanding of ALL students/staff/community members;
• Demonstrates an elevated level of personal/professional honesty, integrity and fairness;
• Desires a long-term commitment with the district and community with residence within the school district strongly encouraged.

The North Douglas School District serves approximately 300 students in grades K-12. The elementary school (K-5) and middle school (6-8) share a building and there is one high school (9-12). The district employs about 50 staff members. The district’s general fund budget is approximately $5 million.

The city of Drain is an historic northwest timber community first settled in 1847. Drain has maintained a stable population of 1,100 over the past 60 years. It is located 8 miles west of Interstate 5, halfway between Roseburg and Eugene. Drain is considered the Gateway to the Pacific, as it provides major access to the Oregon coast, just 50 miles west on scenic state highway 38. The Umpqua River is 15 miles away and is a great source of fishing and water recreation. Victorian houses, low tax rates in Douglas County and a low cost of living combined with outstanding schools make Drain a desirable place to live.

The Board will offer a competitive compensation package to the successful candidate, the salary range is $90,000 – $105,000. The successful candidate must hold or qualify for an Oregon superintendent's license.
