Resources available to help staff, students process Tyre Nichols’ death

On Friday, Memphis released the traumatic video of the police beating that led to Tyre Nichols’ death. Students and staff may need support while they process the tragedy, and the Oregon Department of Education has resources to help.

ODE’s “Mental Health and Well-Being Resources” page includes information about talking to children about tragedies, racism and community trauma. 

ODE is also reminding schools that students can legally take a “mental health day” as part of Chloe’s Law, passed in 2019. Students can have up to five absences excused in a three-month period.
