ODE encourages educators to revisit safe and inclusive school efforts
Monday, January 13, 2020
The Oregon Department of Education reminded school leaders Monday about the expectations for a safe and inclusive school environment.
The email to superintendents, principals and other education community members laid out the legal requirements as well as some tools and resources to help students.
Oregon law requires school districts to adopt policies prohibiting harassment, intimidation or bullying. Districts must have a complaint process available in writing at the main administrative offices and on their websites. Districts should make sure all staff know how to address complaints.
The email signed by Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Colt Gill also asked schools to review their discipline and behavior practices for racial equity and institutional bias.
The SafeOregon tip line provides another avenue for students, parents and community members to report safety threats, harassment or potential violence.
