Baker SD: Northeast Oregon schools face shortage of sports officials
Monday, August 27, 2018
A sports officials shortage has gotten so bad that schools are being forced to reschedule games, according to a Baker School District story.
“It's a huge issue across the state in all sports and an issue across the nation,” Jack Folliard, Oregon Athletic Officials Association executive director, said in the story. The association’s numbers had dropped 18 percent over the past nine years, he said.
Folliard pointed to conflicts with fans and more people having jobs as reasons for the decline.
Sports officiating calls for a desire to help young people and a love of the game, said Pete Caldwell, Northeast Oregon Football Officials Association commissioner.
The article also includes contacts and more information about becoming an official. Read the whole story at the Baker School District website.
