Monday, July 18, 2016
OSBA's annual Summer Board Conference in Bend wrapped up Sunday, July 17, after a long weekend themed around "Creating a vision for student learning."
Among the highlights was a pre-conference Friday that focused on equity and achievement issues. It included presentations on serving the needs of English-language learners and eliminating barriers for students of color.
Kip Motta, a school principal from Utah and former professional basketball scout and assistant coach, was the keynote speaker Saturday. He challenged the roughly 150 in attendance to base all their decision-making on what is best for students.
"Every single thing we do is about the kids," he said.
Other presentations ranged from transgender issues to the legislative outlook in Salem to Oregon's plan for the Every Student Succeeds Act.
Materials from the conference are on the OSBA website.
