Many changes are underway in education. State government has launched aggressive reforms that will change the way people think about public education. Soon, the education community will start a new conversation about how to bolster the public’s investment in schools. This year’s Summer Board Conference features workshops, events and speakers that keep you informed and prepare you to help lead that conversation.

You are among those who must lead the change to ensure that your community’s public education program prepares students for life and work in the global community. Educational experts and OSBA staff members are ready to help you discover your strengths, build on shared knowledge, learn new information and craft exceptional solutions.

You play an indispensible role in keeping your board on track. This year's Board Secretaries' Day starts with a give-and-take discussion about district communications, featuring OSBA's communications staff. An OSBA expert will then guide you through the sometimes-harrowing process of policy manual rewrite. The afternoon program addresses the needs of both new and seasoned board secretaries. Workshops to choose from include a review of Public Meetings, Public Records and Ethics, or new topics such as Executive Session Hazards, Google Docs and Community Engagement.

Friday, July 13 – Two pre-conference workshops for board members

Come a day early and attend a full-day pre-conference session. “Making Meetings Matter,” always recommended by board members who have attended in the past, will help you make your meetings effective and productive. A second pre-conference for board members that begins on Common Core State Standards, followed with “Conscious Communication®,” by well known presenter Rick Brinkman, will enable you to upgrade your communications skills, improve teamwork in your organization and enhance performance.

Common Core State Standards - 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. / Conscious Communications® with Rick Brinkman - 1-4 p.m.

Board members have an important role in the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These recently adopted standards will replace Oregon's standards in English Language Arts and Math over the next few years. The focus of the standards is to establish a base line of skills that are fewer in number, clearer in focus and higher with respect to student expectations and outcomes. In addition the common core state standards will be an integral part of the Governors Achievement compact agreements with the educational entities in Oregon.
