Fall Regionals: 2011 Legislative Review and Strategies for the Future

September 19 - November 1, 2011

Attend a meeting close to you this fall.

The Oregon School Boards Association invites you to its popular series of fall regional meetings. These evening meetings are your opportunity to talk face-to-face with the OSBA executive director and legislative staff, review new laws and hone strategies for advocacy.

What happened in the last legislative session?

We’ll review the 2011 legislative session and the effects the many education bills that passed will have on schools. Find out the latest news on the state budget and Oregon’s economy.

What will the Oregon Education Investment Board mean to you?

OSBA Executive Director Kevin McCann has been paying close attention to the work of the Oregon Education Investment Board as members develop their proposals. He will provide an update on how these changes could impact public education and school boards.

What is expected for 2012?

The Legislature meets again in February for 35 calendar days. Legislative proposals are being developed in the interim –
especially relating to the Oregon Education Investment Board. Learn more about the Governor’s vision for 0-20 education and what performance-based budgeting may mean for districts. We’ll discuss advocacy strategies as we ramp up for the 2012 session.

Meet your regional candidates

Ten positions for the OSBA board are open for nominations this fall. (Nominations close October 1.) Candidates will have an opportunity to make presentations at regional meetings.

You will also hear from local candidates for OSBA’s Legislative Policy Committee. This committee meets several times over the course of the next year to discuss issues and define the priorities and policies to be proposed to the membership. Once approved by the membership, these policies and priorities will guide the association’s legislative work for the 2013 session.

Voting for candidates is November 15 to December 15. New board members and the Legislative Policy Committee serve January 1, 2012, through December 31, 2013.

Become a stronger advocate for your schools

The relationships you build with legislators will help you influence future state decisions. Come to OSBA’s fall regional meetings to build your skills as a public school advocate and prepare to lend your voice in support of your schools and students.

Pre-meeting workshops – another opportunity to learn

OSBA is again offering a free, optional pre-meeting workshop. This one-hour session covers:

  • Legal hot topics
  • Collective bargaining
  • Executive sessions
